Water distribution has a special importance in Amman due to the scarcity of available water sources which doesn’t make it possible to provide continuous water service, thus, making us obligated to apply accurate strict program of water distribution in a fair manner relieving the burden on customers to seek alternative sources.
Amman is broken down into 44 main distribution zones supplied by water through (44) ground or upper tanks. The total number of the tanks for all operational purpose totals (71) tanks with a capacity of (600) thousand cubic meter of water. The tanks are supplied by main lines equipped with water meters to determine the quantity supplied.
The main distribution zones are divided into 330 districts supplied by secondary lines controlled by water meters to calculate the water flow into each zones and to determine the water losses. With special programs contemplated in the Business Plan 2007-2011 including the installation of pressure reducing valves, Miyahuna managed to minimize Non Revenue Water (water losses) to 41% in 2007 compared to 43%. Further work implementing an investment program of (68) million Dinars by replacing a part of the minor distribution lines and the house connection pipes will reduce the water losses percentage to at least 32% by 2011. Further improvements of this program involving outsourcing contracts with private operators will reduce further this high level of losses.
The water networks length totals (6500) KM maintained by (60) working teams. In addition, specialized teams equipped with heavy duty machineries and equipments maintain water networks of big diameters (200-1000) mm. The length of the sewage networks totals (2500) km by which the waste water is collected and moved from the residential compounds to the waste water treatment stations operated and maintained by Miyahuna. the biggest portion of the waste water is removed through the sewage networks to the waste water treatment station in Al-Khirba Al-Samra' to be treated in accordance with the Jordan Specification and to be reused for agricultural purposes after being mixed with the rainwater.
